Guest Columnist

Having been privileged to be a part of NAGAP during the past 25 years, I find choosing a single event that stands out among others is no easy task.  Over the years I’ve shared numerous moments of note and pride with my colleagues as we grew from the fledgling NEAGAP to what NAGAP has come to be and to represent.

The one memory that stands out above all else was that spring day at the annual conference held in Manchester, Vermont, in 1991 when our membership approved the formal change to our name and we began life as the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals.  To commemorate this historic moment, the current board, under President Judy Beals, distributed a blue, tie-dyed, t-shirt to each of us in attendance.  On the front in orange  lettering was NAGAP with an “E” falling away under and between the ‘N’ and ‘A.’  On the back of the shirt was our campus tower logo in black on an orange square, and beneath it the slogan “THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN.”  At Judy’s request we, placed the shirts on our chairs, logo side up and sat back down as the business meeting continued.

After her presentation of how we had come to this point, Judy asked us to stand and look at the shirts. To our surprise, the logo color had changed from orange to yellow and the tower from black to green!  Our ‘change’ had begun, and we’ve never looked back.

I still have that T-shirt.  Now, if it only still fit …

------

I had my first introduction to the National Association of Graduate Admissions Professionals in 1994/1995 when I served on the Conference Committee for NAGAP’s annual meeting in the city that I know and love – New Orleans, Louisiana.

What a difference a day makes! Looking back over the past 18 years, I have continued my journey with NAGAP – serving on four annual conference committees, and continuing on with the opportunity and privilege to serve on the Governing Board. Over my 14 years on the Board, I have served as Research Chair, Membership Chair, International Relations Chair, Vice President, and most recently, President, from 2008-2010.

It is both reassuring and also exciting to me as a Dean charged with the responsibility of leading both graduate and undergraduate aspects of enrollment management, to know without question that NAGAP and its global network of professionals has been, and will continue to be, there for me throughout the trajectory of my professional career in higher education administration and the field of graduate enrollment management.
