Program:

For 14 years, NAGAP has been educating graduate admissions professionals through its series of Professional Development Institutes. Over an intensive two days, attendees will be exposed to advanced topics and discuss opportunities and challenges faced by senior-level enrollment administrators. Session presenters and topics include:

Dr. Charlotte Kuh, Deputy Assistant Director, Division on Policy and Global Affairs and Study Director of the National Research Council’s “Assessment of Doctoral Programs”
Dr. Kuh will discuss the outcomes of the NRC’s assessment of doctoral programs and engage in a dialogue about the impact of the study and its rankings on the recruitment and retention of doctoral students.

Brian Niles, CEO and Co-Founder, TargetX
Brian will discuss “New Media” and how institutions can effectively utilize relationship-building tools (chat, blogs, social networks) in the recruitment of graduate students.

Elizabeth Scarborough, President and Partner, SimpsonScarborough
Elizabeth will discuss the research and technology required to develop a truly integrated marketing plan and the strategies to eliminate barriers to implementation.

James Vaseleck, J.D., Associate Counsel and Executive Assistant to the President of the Law School Admission Council
James will provide an update on hot topics in education law, including the issue of background checks for applicants and students as well as the state of affirmative action law and the Bush administration’s recent guidance in this area.

Gary Williams, Vice President for School Guide Publications
Gary will be available during both days of the Institute to analyze your publications and advertising in one-on-one sessions. Materials should be sent to him in advance for review by January 12th to:

The sessions are expected to begin at 9:00am on Thursday and conclude by 5:00pm on Friday.

Registration and Payment Deadline:

Registration for the Institute is $400 for NAGAP members and $525 for non-members. If you are not already a NAGAP member you can join as an individual (non-transferable) member for $150 or an institutional (transferable) member for $200.That means you can get all of the benefits of membership for only an additional $25 - $75, depending on your membership type. All registrations must be received by December 18, 2008. Confirmations will be e-mailed to registrants within one week of receipt of registration.

Cancellations received in writing prior to December 18, 2008 will be eligible for 100% refund minus a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be made after this date unless the program is cancelled. If a registrant cancels after the deadline or fails to attend the Winter Institute and payment is not received, the registrant’s school will be billed and held responsible for full payment. NAGAP will make a full refund of the registration fee to all participants if the program must be cancelled. However, NAGAP is not responsible for any charges or cancellation fees assessed by airlines, travel agents or hotels.

Hotel Information:

A block of rooms have been reserved at the conference rate of $239 plus tax per night for January 22-23, 2009 at the InterContinental San Juan Resort, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Additional nights are available at the conference rate three days prior and post the room block on a space available basis. Keep in mind that this is peak travel season and rooms outside the block will fill up quickly. You are encouraged to make your room reservations as early as possible. Room reservations must be made directly with the hotel at 1-800-443-2009 no later than December 21, 2008. A one-night deposit is required and will be charged upon making your reservation.

Please ask for the "Group Reservations Desk" when making your reservations to insure you get the conference rate.

Apply for a Fellowship:

 

One fellowship is available for current NAGAP members. The fellowship covers the registration fee, hotel accommodations for two-nights (Wednesday, January 21 and Thursday, January 22, 2009) and air transportation (maximum of $500).

To apply for a fellowship, email your name, title, institution, contact information (including address, phone, fax and email) and a 250-word essay to Patricia Gardner, Associate Director of Recruitment and Admissions, Central Connecticut State University, at gardnerp@ccsu.edu.

Please include "NAGAP Fellowship" in the email subject line.

The essay should include your assessment of the state of graduate admissions and how it pertains to your institution and to you as a professional, as well as how you think the Winter Institute would assist you in your professional development. All fellowship applications must be submitted by Friday, December 5, 2008. To receive full consideration for a fellowship, you must be registered to attend the Winter Institute. Fellowship recipients must agree to submit an essay about their experience at the Winter Institute. Their essay will later appear in an issue of Perspectives, the NAGAP newsletter.

Travel Companions:

If you will have a travel companion with you in Puerto Rico, and they would like some company while you are at the institute sessions, please contact Michelle Howell Smith at mhowell2@unl.edu. Please provide your companion’s contact information and interests, and she will help them connect with each other, whether they would like to go deep sea fishing, shopping, gambling or lounging on the beach.
